The Town of East Longmeadow, through its consultant, Tighe & Bond, and Tighe & Bond’s sub-consultant, EST Associates (EST), will be performing investigations to locate sources of clean water (groundwater and rainwater) that enter the Town’s sanitary sewer system in the Orchard Road and Lynwood Road neighborhoods beginning in the spring of 2023.
Clean water can enter the sewer system through cracks or open joints in the sewer piping and structures (groundwater infiltration) and through direct connections to the sewer system (e.g., catch basins, building roof leaders, and basement sump pumps). Clean water connections to the sewer system are not allowed per East Longmeadow’s Sewer Use Regulations. Clean water entering the sewer system is a concern because:
- It increases the Town’s wastewater conveyance and treatment costs.
- It reduces the available capacity of the sewer piping to convey sewage, which can potentially result in basement backups.
The first phase of investigations are planned to start the week of April 10th. During this first phase, wastewater flow measurements will be collected at certain sewer manholes in your neighborhood during the late night/early morning hours (determined by our contractor). This work will not cause any disruption in your sewer service (i.e., you may use your toilets and sinks as you normally would). If you have questions on this first phase of work or the project as a whole, please contact the East Longmeadow Department of Public Works at (413) 525-5400, Ext. 1204
