Motor Vehicle Excise Tax
In accordance with
MGL Chapter 60A, the Motor Vehicle excise is a tax assessed on owners of all registered motor vehicles for the privilege of registration. Motor vehicle excise is assessed instead of a personal property tax.
The motor vehicle excise is assessed to the registered owner of motor vehicle.The excise is assessed in the city or town where the motor vehicle is principally garaged.
Excise Tax is assessed on a calendar year basis with the assessed valuation determined by the
Registry of Motor Vehicles based on the Manufacturer Suggested List Price (MSRP).

Motor Vehicle Excise Abatement
You may be entitled to a Motor Vehicle Excise abatement if you no longer own the vehicle.You will need to provide information to whom you transferred the title and proof of canceled or transferred registration.The abatement application is on the back of your original Excise bill or you can download an
excise abatement application here.
Please note filing an abatement application does not stay the collection of your excise bill. You must pay your bill in full within 30 days to avoid interest and penalties and you will receive a refund if the abatement is granted.
Change of Address for Motor Vehicle Excise
Please note all Motor Vehicle Excise address changes must be made with the Registry of Motor Vehicles.
